I’ve learned that good thumbnails have important key elements, and if all of the key elements are present in your thumbnail there is a higher chance that the video will have a high click through rate. There's really another science to the thumbnail alone. There's a formula that actually I paid a lot of money to understand.
Important key elements in a YouTube Thumbnail:
Don’t reuse an old thumbnail. Take time to create new ones. I have observed that just putting on the title of the video on the thumbnail doesn’t work and in fact has a very low click through rate.
Use close-up images – use images with a tight focus on the face. Tight focused images strike out more emotion of the viewer. Aside from that, people are likely to click when the face is closer up to the screen.
Big Titles with Clear Font The title shouldn’t be eyestrain. Some people want to be creative with their titles and choose fonts that are cute and cursive. However, an effective title is a simple big font.
It is also important to keep your title to a minimum of three to five words. Do not put the entire title on the thumbnail because it is not a good thing. When I only used a minimum of 3 to 5 words in my title, the click through rate went up.
A good click through rate is anything that is 4% and above. So, if your click through rate is 10% above, then that is a very good sign that your video could go viral.

Social Media Shares
The more you share your video in social media, suggested traffic goes up. Whenever you publish a video and it is shared in any social media platform the suggested traffic will surely go up between 40% to 60%.

The Right Keyword
Finding a popular keyword within your niche is important. One way to find a popular keyword is to visit your competitors’ channel and see what their keywords are. Use a tool like TubeBuddy or VidIQ to get insights.

Check the Competition
Visit your competitors’ channel and check their videos with the highest number of views. Chances are when you model their video with your levelled-up content, you’ll also have more views and your video may appear on their suggested videos.

Use an Attention Grabbing Introduction
The first 15 seconds of the YouTube video is crucial since this is the time they decide whether or not to continue watching your video. It serves as the make or break part of your subscriber or your potential subscribers.
Be sure that your first 10 to 15 seconds are catching, memorable or funny to captivate your audience’s attention.

Pattern Interruption
Pattern interrupts could be anything from new graphics, overlay text and/or pop-up images. Interruptions keep people engaged and wanting to watch minute after minute.

Fresh Information
If you have an old YouTube video you can choose that one and update it. Be sure that you do not have any outdated information. You may go on Facebook groups, research Google, magazines and other resources so you can gather information.

Optimize Video
What does this mean? When you know what keywords your competitors are using, this makes it easier for you to use the same keywords or more keywords to improve your video’s relevance. Be sure to populate these keywords as part of your video upload.
